Physics of materials and waves — acoustics, ultrasonics, crystal & band theory, lasers, optical fibers, conductors and new engineering materials.

Syllabus — 10 Units

    Architectural Acoustics

    Classification of sound, Weber-Fechner law, decibel, absorption coefficient, reverberation, Sabine's formula.

  2. 2

    Ultrasonics

    Production, properties and detection of ultrasonics; velocity determination and engineering applications.

  3. 3

    Crystal Physics

    Crystal structure, crystal systems and Bravais lattices, Miller indices, interplanar distance.

  4. 4

    Band Theory of Solids

    Energy band structure of conductors, insulators and semiconductors, diodes, solar cells, Hall effect.

  5. 5

    Lasers

    Properties of lasers, stimulated emission, Einstein coefficients, population inversion, Nd-YAG & CO2 lasers, holography.

  6. 6

    Optical Fibre Communication

    Fibre-optic system, acceptance angle, numerical aperture, types of optical fibres.

  7. 7

    Conducting Materials

    Conduction in metals, free electron theory, electrical and thermal conductivity, Wiedemann-Franz law.

  8. 8

    Super Conducting Materials

    Properties of superconductors, Type I and Type II, high Tc superconductors and applications.

  9. 9

    New Engineering Materials

    Metallic glasses, nanotechnology, shape memory alloys, bio-materials and biomedical compatibility.

  10. 10

    Non-Destructive Testing

    Objectives of NDT, types of defects, liquid/dye penetrant, radiography, ultrasonic inspection.
