Basics of mechanical engineering — thermodynamics, fuels, properties of gases & steam, heat engines, boilers, IC engines, pumps and power transmission.

Syllabus — 14 Units

    Prime movers, sources of energy, work, power, energy, heat, temperature, laws of thermodynamics.

  2. 2

    Fuels and Combustion

    Classification of fuels, solid, liquid and gaseous fuels, LPG, CNG, biofuels and calorific values.

  3. 3

    Properties of Gases

    Gas laws, gas constant, Cp and Cv, isothermal, polytropic and adiabatic processes.

  4. 4

    Properties of Steam

    Steam formation, types of steam, dryness fraction, steam tables, throttling and separating calorimeters.

  5. 5

    Heat Engines

    Classification of heat engines, Carnot, Rankine, Otto and Diesel cycles.

  6. 6

    Steam Boilers

    Classification of boilers, Cochran, Lancashire, Locomotive, Babcock & Wilcox, mountings and accessories.

  7. 7

    Internal Combustion Engines

    Otto and Diesel four-stroke cycles, two-stroke cycle, indicated & brake power, efficiencies.

    Speed Control

    Governors, IC engine governing and flywheel.

    Pumps

    Reciprocating, bucket, centrifugal and rotary pumps; priming and air chamber.

    Air Compressors

    Uses of compressed air, reciprocating and rotary compressors, work and power for compression, multistage compression.

    Refrigeration & Air Conditioning

    Refrigerants, vapour compression refrigeration, window and split air conditioners.

    Couplings, Clutches and Brakes

    Types of couplings, clutches and brakes; difference between a brake and a clutch.

    Transmission of Motion and Power

    Belt drive, pulleys, chain drive, friction drive and gear drive.

    Ferrous & non-ferrous materials, timber, abrasives, ceramics, glass, plastics, polymers and composites.
