Basics of electrical engineering — DC circuits, electrostatics, electromagnetics, AC circuits, wiring, illumination and electrical safety.

Syllabus — 9 Units

    D.C. Circuits

    Effect of temperature on resistance, series & parallel solutions, star-delta combination, KVL & KCL.

  2. 2

    Electrostatics & Capacitance

    Types of capacitors, series & parallel combinations, charging & discharging, energy stored in a capacitor.

  3. 3

    Electromagnetics

    Magnetic circuits, hysteresis and eddy current loss, electromagnetic induction, self & mutual inductance, coupling.

  4. 4

    Single Phase A.C. Circuits

    Alternating voltages & currents, RMS and average values, phasors, R-L-C circuits, power factor, resonance.

  5. 5

    Polyphase Circuits

    Generation of polyphase voltages, 3-phase systems, phase sequence, power relationships, power measurement.

  6. 6

    Batteries & Cables

    Battery life, charging & discharging, armoured and unarmoured cables.

  7. 7

    Electrical Wiring

    Connectors & switches, systems of wiring, domestic & industrial wiring, sub-circuits and control circuits.

  8. 8

    Illumination

    Types of lamps, fixtures & reflectors, illumination schemes and lumen requirements.

    Safety & Protection

    Electric shock and first aid, grounding, fuses, MCB, ELCB and relays.
